Online identity and technology companies are collaborating to test whether consumers would trust a single, highly secure user-password combination for all of their online accounts. The White House's National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace awarded the tech companies a federal grant to run pilot tests over the next two years to determine the feasibility of using trust elevation tactics to establish online credentials. Trust elevation combines a user name and password with an additional piece of information, such as biometric data.

"Through close collaboration with Criterion Systems, our objective is to transform how usernames and passwords are used and online identities are validated to provide a safer, more trustworthy Internet," says Verizon's Peter Tippett.

The consortium will launch four pilot programs in the next year and another four pilots in 2014. Each of the programs will represent various user cases in different industries. The project is cloud-based and expects to be able to help control the costs and the complexity associated with identity authentication.

"We've been [protecting identities] for a long time . . . and we believe there's an opportunity to bring a higher level of security to the industry as a whole," says Verizon's Peter Graham.
