The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is mapping out enhancements for future versions of its HTML5 and Canvas 2D specifications, which it recently declared "feature-complete."
W3C is developing refinements that could be present in the HTML5.1 and Canvas 2D Level 2 versions of the specifications. The features under consideration for HTML5.1 include improvements to video captioning and fast seeking; better forms, including input modes and autocomplete; spell checking; better image accessibility; and more powerful iframes. Canvas Level 2 improvements could include the ability to work better on high-resolution displays. Although there is no date set for finalizing Canvas 2D Level 2, W3C expects to finalize HTML5.1 as an official W3C Recommendation by 2016.
Meanwhile, the lack of a standard video codec for HTML5 remains problematic, and W3C says it still has not found a suitable royalty-free solution.
IDC analyst Al Hilwa also says mobile applications continue to be a challenge for HTML5. "Native platforms will continue to be the dominant platforms for the most complex apps that wish to take advantage of the latest device features or where performance is top criteria," Hilwa says. "HTML5 will gain share for a broad base of other apps not having such demands."
