An augmented reality app could one day enable tablets and smartphones to show how a living room would look with a tiger-print shag-pile carpet or other modifications and tweaks. Users would simply pinch the texture they want from an image on a touchscreen and paste it onto a photo of the target. Osaka University's Kiyoshi Kiyokawa and colleagues demonstrated the system, called pinch-n-paste, at the recent Virtual Reality Software and Technology conference.

The system computes how the 3-D texture pixels, or texels, should wrap around the shape of the target 3-D surface, and then maps them onto it. "We aim to be able to change any real object's appearance by sampling another real or virtual object's color, texture, shape, and so on, and move, delete, duplicate them as if they are virtual," Kiyokawa says.

Combined with a head-mounted display, such as Google Glasses, it will feel like "your own tailored world is real," Kiyokawa says.
