Five Linux Predictions For 2013

Continued improvements to Linux in 2013 should lead to new applications for the open source operating system, writes Katherine Noyes.
For example, she says the latest Raspberry Pi represents the use of Linux in small, inexpensive personal computers, which are part of a revolution in computing with potentially huge implications for users around the world. Noyes says the trend of smaller and less expensive computers will continue into 2013, as "free, open source, and resource-efficient Linux enables ever smaller and cheaper computing options." She says the small size and low cost of Linux devices will lead to their proliferation throughout all aspects of daily life.
Noyes notes that Linux has reached the point where its features match, and sometimes surpass, what Windows offers mainstream users, which could lead to the development of desktop Linux systems. There also will be an increasing number of hardware options sold with Linux preloaded. Finally, Noyes predicts that in 2013 software makers are going to better understand that what works on one form factor can not necessarily be applied across the board.
