Supercomputers From IBM sed to Improve Jobs in Nevada

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is teaming up with IBM to use supercomputers to help improve Nevada's economy. "This is a transformative step because we're partners with IBM to build a trained workforce to provide innovation economic development that we haven't had, except for gaming," says DRI president Stephen Wells.
The supercomputers are linked to DRI's 3-D labs and have a wide range of applications, including helping to train first responders, producing water flow simulations for hydrologists, and leading to breakthroughs in water conservation and management, which is an important issue for Nevada residents. First responders can train in the 3-D labs, experiencing virtual reality simulations before facing the real dangers of their jobs. Meanwhile, hydrologists can conduct virtual experiments to observe how water flows through plants.
Wells says the DRI/IBM partnership also could lead to more jobs outside of Nevada's gaming industry.
