Researchers ­se Data From Traffic App to Identify High Frequency Accident Locations

Geosocial networks such as the global positioning system traffic app Waze could aid the police in their effort to deploy resources to high-frequency accident locations, including in real time, according to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev researchers.

Waze records location data and enables its 30 million users worldwide to upload and share comments on any detail, including traffic alerts, accidents, or police presence. The team used Waze data and Google Earth as part of its study, and was able to determine that 75 percent of locations in Israel with the highest number of accidents were intersections.

The researchers also analyzed references to a police presence to determine if the police were present at the locations that had the worst traffic accidents. "There were numerous instances where the police were manning quieter intersections, while busier intersections went unmonitored," says researcher Michael Fire. The data showed that police response times varied from 20 minutes to 40 minutes in some situations.
