A key to efficient video compression is predicting future video frames on the basis of past ones. This diagram concerns "intra angular prediction."

The Moving Picture Experts Group, which represents the International Organization for Standardization and the International Telecommunication Union, has developed the High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC). The video-compression technology will enable higher-quality video and could lead to higher-end extensions. HEVC, or H.265, also doubles video quality for a given network data capacity.

HEVC is equipped with a main profile for conventional 8-bit video, as well as a profile that supports high-end 10-bit video. HEVC's better use of bandwidth is designed to allow for higher resolutions without hampering networks and overloading storage systems. HEVC extensions also will enable three-dimensional and multiview video.

However, the technology could be held up by patents that result in royalty payments for those using it. The ISO patent policy, which is shared with the ITU, requires organizations with patents that bear on standards to release them for royalty-free use or license them on a non-discriminatory basis. HEVC is the successor to Advanced Video Codec, or H.264, which is widely used in TVs, online video streaming, and Blu-ray discs.
