Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics researchers recently released Numerical Information Field Theory (NIFTY), a program for data analysis and imaging that can be used to map any number of dimensions or spherical projections without encoding the dimensional information in the algorithm itself. Once a method for image recognition has been programmed with NIFTY, it can be applied to many other applications. NIFTY also can be applied to other fields such as medical imaging.
The researchers say NIFTY handles each situation while accounting for all geometrical quantities, which enables imaging software to be developed more efficiently because testing can be done in one dimension before its application to higher dimensional spaces.
NIFTY also is designed to simplify the programming of formulas for imaging and data analysis, regardless of whether they come from the information field theory or from somewhere else, by providing a natural language for translating mathematics into software.
