Google Publishes Zopfli as Open Source Compression Algorithm to Speed ­p Web Downloads

Google's new Zopfli compression algorithm compresseas all types of data within a webpage, reducing page sizes and speeding the transmission of data.

A new general purpose data compression library from Google can be used to accelerate Web downloads. Google describes the Zopfli compression algorithm as an implementation of the Deflate compression algorithm, which creates a smaller output size compared to previous techniques.

"The smaller compressed size allows for better space utilization, faster data transmission, and lower Web page load latencies," says Google's Lode Vandevenne. And in mobile use, this allows for lower data transfer fees and reduced battery use.

Compression is about 100 times slower than conventional methods, but is about 5 percent better than zlib, according to Google. Zopfli requires two to three orders of magnitude more central processing unit time than zlib at maximum quality, and Google researchers say it is best suited "for compression of static content and other content where data transfer or storage costs are more significant than the increase in CPU time."

Google has open sourced Zopfli, which Vandevenne says allows "Webmasters to better optimize the size of frequently accessed static content."
