Cornell Project Uses Artificial Intelligence to Id Birds
The Merlin AI program could make it easier for amateur bird watchers to identify different species of birds.

An artificial intelligence (AI) project led by researchers at Cornell University could make it easier for amateur bird watchers to identify different species of birds. The project has developed an AI program called Merlin, and the online tool gets smarter the more people interact with it by playing a range of games.
"Merlin is a machine and Merlin needs to understand how people see birds, describe birds, remember the birds they've seen," says Cornell's Miyoko Chu.
The researchers hope to train Merlin to be smart enough to narrow down bird species from a basic search, and Merlin could potentially identify birds on the spot. "Someday in the future you might be able to have capability on your camera or on your binoculars where, as soon as you've gotten that shot, your camera or your binoculars might help give you an identification on that bird," Chu notes.
The researchers hope to have the system available for the spring bird migration.
