The speed of data transfer will rise dramatically as Gigabit Ethernet grows increasingly available.
Gigabit Ethernet will accelerate daily activities in all areas, ranging from health care to manufacturing, says Mozilla's Ignite project leader Will Barkis. The Ignite developer's challenge aims to get developers focused on the new connection speeds, which will eliminate data bottleneck and the need for website or streaming content buffering.
"The feeling of the Web becomes very transparent," Barkis says. "Things will emerge that are just not possible."
Gigabit Ethernet will transform public libraries, and already the Kansas City Public Library has a Gigabit Ethernet network and is rolling out possibly the world's first Web-based Software Lending Library. Users in Kansas City soon will have access to the Software Lending Library, and if the concept proves successful, it could set a precedent for other cities. The Software Lending Library will enable people to remotely check out titles for limited time periods, with Gigabit transfer speeds enabling the use of even complex programs such as Photoshop. To address the potential for software piracy, the software library is likely to require some type of digital rights management in addition to a library card and PIN.
