Mozilla Lab Wants Scientists to Step Out of Analog Age
The Mozilla Science Lab will serve as a virtual science lab where researchers from around the world will be able to share ideas, tools, and best practices for next-generation Web solutions.

Mozilla is creating a science lab for researchers around the world with support from the Alfred Sloan Foundation. The Mozilla Science Lab will serve as a virtual place for sharing ideas, tools, and best practices for use in next-generation Web solutions, and will enable researchers to explore ways to make research faster, more agile, and collaborative.
Software Carpentry, a volunteer organization that teaches basic computer skills, is working with the lab and will provide digital literacy for scientists.
Mozilla says the global collaborative work environment will be different from the publish-the-paper path of scientific research. Scientists may not have the computer skills needed for sharing, re-using, and producing research on the Web.
"Scientists created the Web--but the open Web still hasn't transformed scientific practice to the same extent we've seen in other areas like media, education, and business," says Mozilla Foundation executive director Marc Surman. "For all of the incredible discoveries of the last century, science is still largely rooted in the 'analog' age."
