U.s. to Standardize Car App/communication Device Components

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently issued a call for public and private researchers to develop "a hypothetical four-layer approach to connected vehicle devices and applications certification." The goal is to develop a certification that ensures that different components of intelligent travel systems, which are manufactured according to connected vehicle technology requirements, will be trusted by the system and by users, according to DOT. National interoperability will result in national standards and criteria for the certification of individual products that will have access to the system, system processes, and operational procedures.
DOT says the four layers of certification are environmental abilities, communication protocol abilities, interface abilities, and overall application abilities. Certification research will focus on understanding the needs for device compliance, system security, and privacy requirements.
DOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems program will conduct research activities in support of Policy Research Related to Certification, Technical Requirements for Certification, and Implementation Support and Oversight. DOT also notes that milestones for certification activities must match related milestones in the other program roadmaps.
