.s. Joins Global Effort on Open Data

The United States is involved in an international open-data network that seeks to bring together companies, universities, and non-governmental organizations that support open-data projects and communities. The Britain-based Open Data Institute, which held its first annual summit in London this week, created the international open-data network. A U.S. team will work with the Open Data Institute to replicate its model for promoting open-data adoption. The U.S. government believes publicly accessible data will make it more efficient and effective, and will benefit startups and corporations.
The Open Data Initiative has led to the creation of Data.gov in the United States, and the website has expanded from 47 open data sets to more than 90,000 since March 2009.
Open data can add $3 trillion to $5 trillion a year in value to key sectors of the global economy such as education, transportation, and electricity, according to a new McKinsey & Company study. The study estimates that more than 40 countries have set up open-data programs in an effort to promote economic development and spark innovation.
