Google Launches Build-Your-Own-Phone Project Ara
Motorola says it wants Project Ara to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software.
Motorola wants to allow users of its smartphones to customize the device's components. The Google-owned phone firm has been working on Project Ara for more than a year, and has partnered with Dutch designer Dave Hakkens, who has created a modular phone idea called Phonebloks.
Under the program, consumers would purchase a basic phone structure, and then add modules such as a keyboard, a battery, or other sensors. Motorola calls the frame that will hold all of the modules in place an endoskeleton. The firm wants "to give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it's made of, how much it costs, and how long you'll keep it," according to a recent blog post.
Motorola also wants to create a vibrant, third-party developer ecosystem for hardware, similar to what the Android platform has done for software. The company expects to invite developers to create modules in a few months and launch a module developer's kit soon afterwards.
