The National Taiwan University's Yang-Fang Chen and colleagues have developed a self-adhesive memory card using a layer of graphene coated with conductive polymers and topped with aluminum electrodes. The researchers applied the memory sticker to several surfaces, including a business card and a medical wristband, and the device also can be peeled off and attached to something else. The researchers found that it could retain data even when curved. Chen says the memory device is flexible as well as transferable.
Chen notes that a few more parts could be added, such as a Wi-Fi radio, to make the device act as a flexible flash-memory drive. "We think the idea might be realizable in the future," he says.
Durham University's Mike Petty believes techniques will likely be developed to create whole flexible devices. However, he says upgraded versions of the memory device itself might be useful on their own.
