The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has launched AweSim, a Web-based app store that will offer high-performance computing (HPC) tools to small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses.

AweSim provides infrastructure and easy-to-use apps for HPC modeling and simulation. The apps are designed to help integrate manufacturing expertise, simulation software, and cloud-based computing and storage resources within a digitized workflow.

"Simulation-driven design replaces physical product prototyping with faster and less expensive computer simulations, reducing the time to take products to market, while improving quality and cutting costs," says Ohio Technology Consortium director of shared infrastructure Kevin Wohlever.

AweSim's first apps will address needs that have been identified by industry partners in the fields of advanced materials, agribusiness and food processing, and medical technologies.

OSC also is working with major HPC software vendors to make parts of their tools available as apps. Consulting services also are available as part of AweSim, but they are not mandated.

The public-private partnership is a spinoff of the Blue Collar Computing initiative, which was launched in the mid-2000s to provide smaller users with access to HPC resources.
