The Internet of Things in 2014: Steady as It Goes
Continued progress is anticipated this year towards the Internet of Things.

Although 2014 is not expected to bring a breakout moment for the Internet of Things, continued progress is likely toward an interconnected network of devices that will communicate with each other over the Internet.
The commercial sector is likely to create standards for the Internet of Things, and already commercial consortia such as the AllSeen Alliance are forming. In 2014, more commercial agreements are likely to emerge aimed at encouraging vendors to collaborate on a common communications platform for devices.
In addition to software, physical medium devices will be necessary. Although Wi-Fi appears to be a likely choice, the technology currently requires significant power to broadcast and receive the radio waves used to connect to the Internet. The Internet of Things necessitates data sharing that is transmitted in bursts and depends more on stability than speed, and technologies are emerging to fill this need.
Also in 2014, device-to-device communication will increase as hardware vendors add smarter communication devices to their products.
In addition, payment systems including existing credit and debit cards, new systems such as Coin, and all-online systems such as PayPal and Google Wallet will increasingly integrate with the Internet of Things, thereby facilitating transactions and driving interest in establishing the communications and security of the Internet of Things.
