Google's 4k Video Format to Hit Tvs, Mobile Devices, Pcs

Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, LG, and Sharp have introduced TVs that support VP9, Google's new 4K video format.
VP9 is a more efficient video format that will enable users to receive streaming services with high-definition quality, but at half the bandwidth. Videos will be shown at a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.
Mobile device and PC makers also are introducing products this year that can play 4K content from YouTube and other online video services. Moreover, a variety of vendors plan to introduce graphics chips and applications processors that will help smartphones, tablets, and PCs play back 4K content.
VP9 is competing for adoption as a 4K video standard with H.265, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding, which is being promoted by the International Telecommunications Union. New chips will support 4K, but it is not clear if they will have on-chip decoders or require specialized accelerators.
