Shortage of Mainframe Skills Looms but Companies Remain in Denial
Even with a mainframe skills shortage on the horizon, only about 40 percent of CIOs have a formal plan in place to address the issue, according to a survey by Compuware.

A mainframe skills shortage is on the horizon, but only about 40 percent of CIOs surveyed by Compuware said they had a formal plan in place to address the issue. The figure is slightly better than the 46 percent who said they had no formal plan in Compuware's 2011 survey.
Compuware surveyed 350 companies around the world, and found that 61 percent of CIOs view the loss of people with mainframe development skills as a primary concern.
Many of the people with core mainframe skills are nearing retirement age, and about 66 percent of CIOs fear the impending retirement of the mainframe workforce will hurt their business by reducing their ability to support legacy applications.
Many core applications in areas such as banking, finance, and telecommunications still run on mainframe systems.
