Linux Foundation to Offer Introductory Linux Mooc on Edx
The Linux Foundation will offer a free Linux development course this summer on massive open online course platform edX.

This summer, the Linux Foundation plans to offer a Linux development course on edX, the massive open online course platform developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
The course will cover the same material that is taught in the foundation's introduction to Linux class, which is designed for people who have little to no experience with the open source operating system. The course, which is open to anyone with a Web connection, is free, compared to $2,500 the foundation normally charges for a course that is taught online and in person through authorized training partners.
The partnership with the Linux Foundation gives edX a chance to expand its course offerings to include content from non-academic institutions.
The Linux Foundation also sees the edX platform as an affordable and easy way to boost Linux talent in the marketplace. "As use of Linux rises we need to keep up with demand," says foundation director Jim Zemlin. "This is a way for people to get familiar with Linux."
Edx president Anant Agarwal says adding content from organizations external to academia would address requests for professional development material. Zemlin says the course will give users a foundation for taking advanced courses or acquiring new skills from their peers by contributing to open source projects.
