Fit to Be Tried
Rice University students have created a virtual fitting room, to help ensure that clothing bought online actually fits the buyer.

A team of electrical and computer engineering students at Rice University has created a virtual dressing room for a design project. The virtual fitting room should help ensure that clothes ordered online actually fit the buyer.
Lam Yuk Wong and partner Xuaner Zhang used Microsoft Kinect to enable shoppers to scan their image into their software to create a virtual mannequin that preserves their dimensions, and even their skin and hair color. The software renders realistic details, even wrinkles in garments, and users will be able to rotate their three-dimensional body model to see how dresses or shirts fit from all sides.
"The existing virtual fitting rooms don't use customized body models that look like the shoppers," says Wong. "It takes a long time to display the fully dressed models, and they don't look realistic."
Wong and Zhang recently won the $5,000 Willy Revolution Award at Rice's annual Design Showcase.
