Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed a smartphone app to help motorists avoid parking fines.
ParkingMaestro is designed to warn users when they should return to their vehicles, based on the distance to the parking space and the time remaining before parking expires. Users either scan the street parking sign using the app's image recognition function or manually enter the details of the sign or parking ticket. The app tracks their movements and uses an algorithm to determine how long it will take to walk back to the vehicle.
ParkingMaestro is available for iPhones and will be adapted for Android phones.
Co-developers Mark Schroder and Patrick Acheampong participated in the Germinate Program at the University of Queensland's ilab startup accelerator to develop the app. "The program provides access to industry mentors, successful entrepreneurs, and funding support, giving applicants like Mark and Patrick the opportunity to develop their digital business ideas into reality," says ilab program director Bernie Woodcroft.
