Cisco's 2014 Annual Security Report says about 1 million information security staffers and managers are needed to meet the current demand for cybersecurity professionals around the world--a number the report says likely will increase over the next five years.
Cisco's Sujata Ramamoorthy says the shortage of cybersecurity professionals is expected to become more pronounced due to the rapid growth in the number of devices connected to the Internet of Things, the increasingly complex nature of information infrastructure, and the lack of visibility into cloud services.
The billions of dollars that are being lost each year as the result of cyberespionage and other security threats also is driving the demand for more security professionals, the report notes. The report says these and other trends, including the growing volume and subtlety of data on cyberattacks, also will require cybersecurity professionals to posses new skills, particularly data analysis skills that provide organizations with new insights into cyberattacks.
The report says organizations may be able to meet the need for such skills by hiring dedicated data scientists to work on their cybersecurity teams.
