University of Pennsylvania researchers have developed technology that helps make computer networks run more efficiently. The Gencore Systems researchers developed a new programming language that helps the technology automatically check through large amounts of data to find and correct performance problems.

"We build an intelligence layer in the software to fix the problems in real time and take the human out of the loop," says University of Pennsylvania professor Boon Thau Loo.

Gencore's team members report that companies are depending on complex software, such as computer programs that collect large amounts of data, and are shifting away from complex hardware. With the swelling volume of data that companies rely on to maintain their products, Gencore is working to make the data more manageable.

After spinning Gencore off as a startup, the researchers are currently looking for an Internet service provider to test portions of the technology in preparation for the commercialization of their product. "It's very rewarding to take what we've learned for so long in school and apply it in the real world," says Gencore co-founder Hardor Gil. "It's a very different setting that requires us to think about the customer base."
