Wi-Fi Group Acts to Simplify Peer-to-Peer Video, Printing and Other Tasks
The Wi-Fi Alliance has unveiled four new optional features that can be included in the certification of new devices.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has developed four sets of mechanisms for carrying out certain tasks over Wi-Fi Direct. The new features, called services, are optional but can be included in the certification of a device.
The services allow the user to "discover, connect, and do" a particular function with one click, according to Wi-Fi Alliance CEO Edgar Figueroa.
He says Wi-Fi Direct can work in several different ways depending on how the technology is implemented in each participating device. For example, a user can send a presentation from a PC to a projector over Wi-Fi Direct as long as both products have the same basic technology, in this case a system called Miracast, which is designed for screen mirroring and display.
The Alliance also will certify products of three other standard services, including Wi-Fi Direct Send for sending and receiving content, Wi-Fi Direct Print for printing documents directly from a device, and Wi-Fi Direct for Digital Living Network Alliance for devices built with that consumer media standard.
Figueroa says the Alliance is providing vendors with applications for each of the four services, as well as a toolkit for building similar capabilities for other processes in a standard way.
