The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) P2413 Working Group wants to develop an overall architecture for the Internet of Things (IoT) that would encompass multiple industries and technologies. The architecture would consist of an interoperability framework linking devices and related applications.
The new standard also would enable data sharing across IoT systems, says IEEE P2413 Working Group chair Oleg Logvinov.
Other industry groups, including enterprise-level organizations such as the Industrial Internet Consortium and the consumer-focused AllJoyn initiative, also are developing IoT standards. IEEE wants to create a standard architecture so IoT systems for all industries can work together. "They need a place where they can come together and move forward as a scalable, unified platform," Logvinov says. "That type of unification can be enabled only by a global, international standard." He says the advantages of cohering different IoT segments together could include economies of scale, lower hardware prices, and future applications.
The P2413 group aims to define the basic building elements of IoT systems that are common across industries, according to Logvinov. He says one area of concentration is converting the data coming from various platforms into commonly understood data objects, with the goal of completing the standard by 2016.
