The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Will Computers Take Your Job?

In the future, intelligent machines will increasingly replace knowledge workers, according to a group of artificial intelligence (AI) experts. Many of today's knowledge workers are paid to do things that computers will soon be able to do, says Andrew McAfee, co-founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Initiative on the Digital Economy. "I don't think a lot of employers are going to be willing to pay a lot of people for what they're currently doing," McAfee says. In addition, analysts say AI increasingly will move up the skill hierarchy to replace middle-class workers.
However, AI still has many limitations, as researchers are still unable to instill common sense into a computer, says the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Paul Cohen.
Although AI machines are still far from being able to equal the processing power of the human brain, that is mostly a hardware problem, says George Washington University professor Peter Brock. He also says scientists should be able to build an AI device that matches the processing power of a human brain within 12 years.
Meanwhile, Cohen says DARPA is working on a project that uses software to assemble code by pulling from pre-written programs.
