DARPA Wants to Toughen-­p Wan Edge Networking, Security

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to improve networking and security at the wide area network (WAN) edge, although it has revealed little about a new program known as Edge-Directed Cyber Technologies for Reliable Mission Communication (EDICT).

A preliminary description indicates EDICT's objective is to strengthen resilience of communication over Internet Protocol networks with new capabilities in computing devices within user enclaves at the WAN edge. "It is envisioned that systems developed within this program will combine real-time network analytics, holistic decision systems, and dynamically configurable protocol stacks to mitigate WAN failures and attacks on the fly, in a mission-aware fashion," DARPA says. The protocols would include those at the network, transport, and application layers of the five-layer protocol reference model.

DARPA says new approaches are needed due to the vulnerability of WAN infrastructure that supports this communication. "Rapid recovery from such events is critical for ensuring mission success," the agency notes. "In the current art, however, recovery can take anywhere from tens of minutes to several hours or more, depending on the nature of the event[s]."

DARPA plans to provide further details of the program during a Proposers Day in December.
