Microsoft to Release Project Orleans as Open Source

Microsoft plans to open source Project Orleans, a distributed computing research framework for building cloud services. The company will release the code under an MIT license and publish it on the GitHub site in early 2015. Microsoft plans to accept user contributions. Developers who are not distributed systems experts will be able to build cloud services that scale with demand and maintain high performance.
The framework is designed for building cloud services such as social graphs (Facebook friends or Twitter followers), real-time analytics, and interactive entertainment. Orleans also works with large numbers of devices such as smartphones and Internet of Things sensors. The framework is different from other platforms because it is asynchronous, and developers do not need to worry about concurrency, locks, or race conditions because it is also single threaded.
"With concurrency, it's hard not just to write the code but to conceptualize and think about what you need to do," says Hoop Somuah of the Halo Cloud Services Team at 343 Industries. He describes Orleans as a "a cloud native programming model that makes it possible to build services from the ground up, with the cloud in mind."
