Security for next-generation company networks will be the focus of a presentation at the CeBIT trade fair in Hannover, Germany, in March.

Experts around the world are working on new technology that will make it easier for companies to expand their networks, but researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC) believe the strategy also could create a perfect loophole for attackers. They say although software-defined networking (SDN) would give companies greater flexibility to add components, a network controlled solely by a central controller could enable hackers to access the entire network.

The AISEC researchers plan to demonstrate visualization software that will show how every component in an SDN is running in real time and how they are communicating with the controller. "We can show how software influences the behavior of different components using the controller, or, in the case of an attack, how it disrupts them," says AISEC's Christian Banse.

The researchers will discuss a solution for preventing unauthorized applications or malware from accessing SDN systems; their technique would block unplanned or undesirable activities.
