Army Research Lab Lays Out Hpc Strategy

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory has released its comprehensive Science and Technology plan.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is utilizing supercomputing and large-scale analytics to maintain its position as the country's top laboratory for land forces.

Advanced computing is fundamental to ARL's mission to "discover, innovate, and transition science and technology to ensure dominant strategic land power," according to the Lab's Technical Implementation Plan for 2015-2019.

ARL will focus on seven major issues: computational sciences, materials research, sciences-for-maneuver, information sciences, sciences-for-lethality and protection, human sciences, and assessment and analysis.

The computational sciences initiative aims to harness the potential of computational sciences and emerging high-performance computers, facilitate information dominance, and improve advanced computing architectures and computer science technologies. The first aspect of this plan, Tactical High Performance Computing, is meant to provide 100 petaflops of computing power to improve mission effectiveness and mitigate risk in hostile environments.

"Numerous applications are envisioned for this system in the future and include artificial intelligence aids for decision-making, processing large-scale datasets, and navigation systems for autonomous vehicles," according to the ARL plan.

The plan also highlights the need to make limited resources go farther. "Emerging trends suggest that the future Army's operational environment will likely be dominated by decreasing domestic budgets and reduced force structure," the plan says.
