Google and Microsoft have agreed to merge their separate work on new JavaScript technologies into a single common framework. The collaboration will merge their independent JavaScript projects into Angular 2, a new version of the Google JavaScript application framework for building websites and applications. Google will drop its work on the AtScript JavaScript-based scripting language, which was originally going to underlay Angular 2, in favor of a version of Microsoft's TypeScript language that will integrate key proposed features of AtScript.

Microsoft's S. Somasegar says the two companies have been working together on the project for several months. Jonathan Turner, a program manager for Microsoft's TypeScript team, says the first results of the collaboration will be seen in the upcoming 1.5 release of TypeScript. Turner says the new features will help Web developers write cleaner code and will include new features, such as a new method for annotating class declarations using metadata.

The announcement, made at the ng-conf in Salt Lake City on March 5, has been received positively by the developer community, although some questions remain about what, if any, support Angular 2 will have for websites and apps migrating from Angular 1.
