Computer science majors have the best 20-year net return on investment (ROI) out of all of the degrees in the new College ROI Report from PayScale. The data in the interactive report can be further segmented to determine the best value college by major. Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley (UC-Berkeley), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) top the list for computer science programs.

A student graduating from the Stanford computer science program can expect an average net ROI of $1.6 million over 20 years compared to someone who enters the workforce straight from high school. The promise of a job with a good salary might make up for the total cost of $233,000 (including about $30,000 in loans) for attending Stanford over four years, according to the PayScale study. The 20-year net ROI for UC-Berkeley and MIT are $1.2 million and $1.1 million, respectively. The best value college for engineering majors is Rice University, with a 20-year ROI of nearly $1.2 million.
