The European Union-funded BUTLER initiative to expand the Internet of Things (IoT) in a cooperative and seamless manner has published its achievements.

The three-year BUTLER project officially ended in October, launching a portal to ensure the compatibility of new technologies and devices as well as adequate infrastructure for data flows.

The Open Platform portal also documents the interoperability of innovations, and makes reference to existing use cases. The project partners designed the portal to serve as the point of reference for the field of IoT, long after its completion.

Consortium members already have used the platform to forge new links, and to help match device providers with viable solutions to bring innovations to market.

The "Smart Shopping" application, which will alert merchants in the Spanish city of Santander on the best times to send notifications to consumers, is one technology that has been developed through the platform.

BUTLER also offers an analysis of ethics, privacy, and data protection issues.
