Facebook AI Software Learns and Answers Questions

New artificial intelligence (AI) software developed by Facebook can process text and then answer questions about it.
Facebook introduced the software, called Memory Network, during its recent F8 developer conference in San Francisco.
The company could use the software to improve the search capabilities of its social networking service, but the technology also could lead to more accurate and useful personal assistant software.
Facebook's AI project put a new twist on deep learning, a popular approach to machine learning. The company says its researchers added "a multimillion-slot memory system" to a network of crude "neurons" to process data. The network essentially functions as a short-term memory where facts can be stored and processed.
Facebook also says its researchers have taught deep-learning software to classify 487 different sports from examining video clips. The company's Mike Schroepfer says Facebook could potentially apply the software to videos uploaded to the site to show users ads that are closely targeted to what they are watching.
