Google has introduced Project Brillo, an operating system for the Internet of Things.

The announcement of Project Brillo was one of the highlight's of Google's recent I/O conference. An operating system for the Internet of Things (IoT), Brillo is designed to run on and connect IoT-based low-power devices.

"Brillo is smaller and slimmer than Android, providing a kernel, hardware abstraction, connectivity, and security infrastructure," says Ars Technica technology editor Peter Bright.

Google envisions Brillo serving home systems, but also serving systems in rural areas and cities, and leading to more efficient control and monitoring of roads and lights.

Google also unveiled Weave, a communications layer that enables the cloud, mobile devices, and Brillo to speak to one another. AnandTech describes Weave as "an [application programming interface] framework meant to standardize communications between all these devices."

Some observers view the moves by Google as a positive development for the IoT space, but there are questions as to whether Brillo will be the easiest platform for developers to build on, whether it will have the greatest reach over the long term, and whether IoT is headed for a format war.
