A software defined networking (SDN) operating system developed by the ONOS project is now up and running on a "virtual slice" of Internet2.
The ONOS project is developing an open source SDN operating system for service provider networks, and its ONOS OS went live in December. One use case involved the implementation of a graphical user interface.
The national education network is using the SDN capabilities to provision virtual networks based on FlowSpace Firewall. The project also deployed an SDN Internet Protocol peering application that connects and exchanges traffic with other traditional networks.
Duke University, Florida International University, the Indiana University GigaPoP Network Operations Center, the University of Maryland, and the University of Utah have been connected and are using the ONOS OS. Internet2's Rob Vietzke says the initiative "is another demonstration of how Internet2 and the academic community continue to be a large-scale platform in which pre-market innovations can be prototyped at scale."
