Researchers at South Korea's Hanyang University and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology say they have resolved an anomaly in the Android IO stack known as journaling of journal.
The researchers presented their work last week at the USENIX technical conference in Santa Clara, CA. Their paper describes how they successfully eliminated the root cause of journaling of journal anomaly--the filesystem journaling.
The researchers overhauled the interaction between SQLite and EXT4, using the Android IO stack-based write operation for committing logs to the SQLite journal file. The logs would be directly written to the storage, while the activity of committing the logs would not accompany any updates in the page cache entries, nor would data block or metadata.
Regarding NAND Flash endurance, the authors believe that by "decreasing the IO volume generated by SQLite to 1/6, [Write Ahead Logging Direct IO (WALDIO)] can make the TLC NAND Flash not an infeasible choice for a storage device on the Android platform. Adoption of TLC NAND Flash in Android device can significantly reduce the cost of the smartphone and can make it available to the wider community in the world."
