The U.S. Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) is funding a program to develop the Cyberattack Automated Unconventional Sensor Environment (CAUSE), a framework for coupling known threat indicators with external information sources such as social media and search engine trends. CAUSE aims to create an automated probabilistic warning system to identify new attack vectors as they emerge.
"Observations of earlier attack phases, such as target reconnaissance, planning, and delivery, may enable warning of significant cyberevents prior to their most damaging phases," according to an IARPA broad agency agreement.
One of the biggest challenges in creating an early warning system using outside data sources will be cutting through the noise. Unconventional sensors produce tons of data on a daily basis, most of which is irrelevant to security issues.
Developers that make it past the first stage of the competition will be granted access to internal threat data maintained by participating companies. The projects then will have to combine the internal and external data sources into a single automated system and run tests against simulated cyberattacks.
It is expected to take more than three years to complete the process.
