Human and Organizational Factors Influence Software Quality

New research from Frank Philip Seth, a doctoral student at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland, describes software development as an information-intensive process within companies. In his doctoral dissertation, Seth proposes that human factors in the software development process determine software quality.

Seth investigated the roles of human and organizational factors that influence software quality in a study that employed the Straussian grounded theory. He collected empirical data from 13 software companies, and includes 40 interviews. Seth's results suggest software development managers influence the productivity of developers and the quality of software products. Several challenges of software testing that affect software quality were investigated.

Although tools, infrastructure, and other resources also are positive factors, the methods of development were found to have little impact on software quality. Seth says the findings could offer helpful insight to academic researchers and software developers.
