IBM and France's GENCI high-performance computing agency will collaborate on an effort to accelerate the path to exascale computing.
The partners say they will focus on developing complex scientific applications for the new system, which is considered to be a key step toward achieving the goal of exascale computing technology.
The joint venture will work closely with GENCI technologies provided by the OpenPOWER ecosystem. The ecosystem includes diverse computing solutions that use IBM's open POWER processor technology.
GENCI will study the impact of the OpenPOWER architecture on scientific applications, as well as the requirements of the new technology in an attempt to gain a better understanding of computing industry advances toward the goal of exascale computing.
The scientific apps are expected to achieve more than 100 petaflops, and IBM sources say this would be an important step toward the goal to achieve exascale computing technology. GENCI sources say accelerator technologies will be an area of particular emphasis.
The project is expected to run for at least 18 months and involve thousands of developers.
