Computer scientists from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) have developed ClustEval, a tool designed to aid researchers in their efforts to retrieve meaningful knowledge from big data.

The researchers say the tool can accelerate the entire process of clustering, and make the fundamental data analysis procedure more objective.

There are hundreds of different tools that researchers can use to look for hidden patterns in accumulated and stored data, but each requires very specific settings and often a deep understanding of the underlying algorithm.

"There is no overview of what is out there, what should be used when, and there is no objective comparison of the available possibilities," says professor Richard Rottger, who heads SDU's Practical Computer Science & Bioinformatics research group. He notes ClustEval can provide an unbiased overview of all available cluster tools so researchers can get suggestions on what tool to use with what parameters in which setting.
