Sandia's Panther Predicts Movement

Sandia National Laboratories' Pattern Analytics to Support High-Performance Exploitation and Reasoning (PANTHER) team is aimed specifically at helping analysts wade through big data.

The Pattern Analytics to Support High-Performance Exploitation and Reasoning (PANTHER) team at Sandia National Laboratories has developed software that will enable security data analysts to work more efficiently with big data sets.

The Tracktable code automates the observation of the movement of people and objects around locations. The software couples sensor images with additional data and presents both sets of information in a searchable format.

The traditional method of searching for commonalities or anomalies in the movement of people, ships, or airliners is to compare their trajectories against other people, ships, or airplanes. The PANTHER team has developed a way to store and represent trajectories so computers can compare them more efficiently and more quickly. For example, the lab says a computer would be able to quickly group flights that are behaving in a similar way and have the same code together and present them to a viewer for interpretation.

The researchers note the code could be used for any problem that involves movement.
