Significant virtual reality (VR) milestones are expected in 2016, which will be the first year immersive three-dimensional VR technologies will be put in reach of consumers.
For example, several VR headsets are scheduled to make their market debut in the new year, including Oculus' Rift, HTC/Valve's HTC Vive, and Sony's PlayStation VR. Accompanying these new headsets will be new games and other VR experiences, such as Owlchemy labs' Job Simulator.
Meanwhile, some companies are focusing on the production of live-action content for VR applications, and prepping the 2016 commercial release of devices such as Nokia's Ozo, a spherical video camera, for the purpose of giving filmmakers more options in the VR arena.
A fourth milestone could come from the Void, in the form of a VR entertainment center. The Void's concept is to equip visitors with a headset and other gear, and then enable them to roam a large stage filled with a labyrinth of physical walls and effects such as heat and water sprays, which correlate with imagery displayed on the headset.
