Nine programming trends expected to pan out over the next five years include the REST protocol's initial dominion over the Internet of Things (IoT).

A resurgence in binary protocols also is anticipated as the IoT generates massive volumes of data while devices use a lot of small packets requiring tighter encoding.

Also expected is the displacement of the HTML format by video online, a wider expansion of smartphone functions in coming generations, and the advent of databases far vaster than previously created thanks to demand from next-generation location-aware apps and autonomous cars.

In addition, JavaScript will be the premier programming language, with apps authored by transcoding robots.

Other predictions include PHP's aggressive competition against Node.js, as the latest versions of just-in-time tools such as PHP 7 and the HipHop Virtual Machine offer dramatically faster performance.

Another expectation is for programming education initiatives to come to fruition, with a greater portion of the general population attempting to write code.

A final prediction is that corporate supervisors will become more familiar with writing software, as well as being more active participants in employees' coding efforts.
