One-in-Three Developers Fear AI Will Replace Them
A new study found that nearly a third of software engineers worry they will be made obsolete by artificial intelligence.

Twenty-nine percent of software engineers say the most worrisome part of their careers is they might be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), according to an Evans Data survey of 550 developers.
The second biggest worry is the platform the developer is working on will become obsolete, followed by the fear the platform will not catch on.
"Developers worrying that AI would be advanced enough to replace them is very similar to developers worrying that the technology trends have outpaced their own skills and abilities," says Evans Data research director Michael Rasalan.
Other results of the survey include nearly 80% of respondents agreed robotics and AI will enhance life, while close to 60% of respondents somewhat agreed robotics and AI will be disasters in the making.
In addition, a recent Oxford University study warned the work of software engineers may soon become computerized as advances in machine learning allow design choices that can be optimized by algorithms. These systems also can detect bugs with a reliability humans are unlikely to match, according to the study.
"Big databases of code also offer the eventual prospect of algorithms that learn how to write programs to satisfy specifications provided by a human," says Oxford's Michael Osborne.
