IBM Watson's Creative Director on Amazon Echo and How AI Can Save Lives

In an interview, Maya Weinstein, senior interaction designer and creative director at IBM Watson, discusses the current crop of artificial intelligence (AI) assistants and how the technology can help save lives.

Weinstein says when she first joined Watson, there were only a few application program interfaces, but IBM has expanded so much into more human AI capabilities, and there are now many foreign language translations, personality analysis, and analyzing for tone.

"I work with partners as an idea consultant to help them find the best possible way to use Watson as an application," Weinstein says. "We talk about where they want to go in the market and how to use Watson to do this. We do it rapidly in a few days, looking at how we can form a collaboration."

Weinstein says a recent project with Magellan Health involved providing a technology platform that can help veterans become better adjusted and help cut down on suicides.

She also says there are some interesting consumer AI products such as Nest, but there should be more thought about what people really need. "There are ways we can solve issues through AI and design that are powerful," Weinstein says.
