Vicki Hanson’s credentials within the technology sector are impressive to say the least, and the professor of computing from the Rochester Institute of Technology is passionate about her subject.

But while she is clearly proud to have been voted recently as the new president of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), she makes no secret of her desire to see many more women making their way into executive positions across the technology industry.

The ACM is the largest organization of its kind in the world, with millions of people using its educational resources on a global basis every year but, Hanson says, "It would be nice to see more women in leadership roles at the top for-profit companies in the tech industry."

Nonetheless, Hanson sees her own election to the position of ACM president as significant, particularly given that it has coincided with the election of two other female computer scientists to leadership roles.

"It certainly wasn’t planned that the ACM would have an all-women leadership team," she tells me. "Each of us ran for office as individual candidates with our own individual viewpoints and goals for the organisation."
