Researchers Set New 5g World Record and Earn Multiple Awards
Researchers used a variant of 5G technology to set a new world record in spectrum efficiency for wireless communication.

Researchers at the universities of Lund and Bristol say they have set a new world record in spectrum efficiency for wireless communication using a form of 5G technology called Massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO).
Spectrum efficiency is the measure of how much data can be transmitted from an antenna's radio signal. The researchers say they were able to achieve 22 times the data speed of existing 4G technology, doubling their previous record.
The team says it will next test how the technology works when the connection units are mobile. "That is more realistic, as people using their mobile phones don't exactly sit still," says Lund Steffen Malkowsky.
5G wireless technology is expected to reach the market around 2020. It will consume less energy, enable faster data transmissions, and increase transmission capacity by a factor of 1,000.
Massive MIMO will equip more base stations with hundreds of antennas, compared to the few antennas used currently.
The researchers note the potential of the Internet of Things and its massive capacity requirements can be further realized by 5G technologies.
